MANILA, Philippines — As the country marks the 128th Anniversary of Philippine Independence on Friday, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called on Filipinos to "protect truth from distortion" and "restore trust in a time increasingly marked by division and distrust."

In his message, the President paid tribute to the heroes who secured the country's liberty and to the countless Filipinos who devoted their lives to advancing the common good.

Marcos said the declaration of independence in Kawit, Cavite on June 12, 1898 marked a landmark chapter in Philippine history.

"It was the moment we formally asserted our right to govern ourselves and determine our own destiny. The years that followed tested our resolve as we built institutions, strengthened national unity, and sustained a truly independent republic," he said.

The President expressed hope that the occasion would deepen the people’s understanding of the past and inspire a renewed sense of duty to the country as the nation continued building a Bagong Pilipinas "worthy of the sacrifices that secured our sovereignty and of the dreams and aspirations that gave birth to our Republic."

"We must protect truth from distortion, harness technology wisely, and restore trust in a time increasingly marked by division and distrust. How we respond to these demands will shape the course of our nation and define what we pass on to future generations," Marcos said.

"As we honor this day, we are reminded that freedom is not merely a legacy we inherit but a responsibility we must uphold," he added.

Marcos, together with the first family, led the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies honoring Dr. Jose Rizal and the nation’s heroes, "whose sacrifices secured the country’s freedom," Malacañang said.

This was followed by the Parada ng Kalayaan at the Quirino Grandstand, where colorful floats, inspiring performances, and patriotic music come together to celebrate the Filipino spirit and the freedom each generation upholds.

The simultaneous raising of the Philippine flag was also held at the Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite, symbolizing the birth of the Philippines as a sovereign nation; the Barasoain Church Historical Landmark in Bulacan; the Pinaglabanan Shrine in San Juan City; the Mausoleo de los Veteranos dela Revolucion in Manila; the Museo ng Kasaysayang Panlipunan ng Pilipinas in Angeles City; and Bonifacio National Monument in Caloocan City.

Similar flag-raising activities were conducted at the same time in various government agencies and local government units.

"This year’s Independence Day celebration is a meaningful journey that honors the country’s past, celebrates the present, and reflects the shared hopes and dreams of the Filipino people for the future," Malacañang said.

"More than a celebration of history, this occasion reminds Filipinos of their shared duty to build a stronger, more united, and better future for all," it added.
