The San Francisco Giants have added a new infielder to their roster.
The Houston Astros have announced that the Giants have claimed infielder Shay Whitcomb off of waivers from them.
The Giants claiming Whitcomb off waivers comes just a few days after the Astros designated him for assignment. Now, the 27-year-old will provide San Francisco with another infielder who has some major league experience.
Before being designated for assignment by the Astros, Whitcomb recorded two home runs, five RBI, and a .130 batting average in 17 games this season. This was after he had one home run and a .125 batting average in 20 games with the Astros during the 2025 season.
Whitcomb is still looking to break out at the major league level. Perhaps getting a fresh start with a team like the Giants could help the 27-year-old infielder successfully do just that.
Overall, there is no harm in the Giants taking a chance on Whitcomb with this waiver claim. They currently have a 50-71 record and are out of the playoff race. Because of this, they are in a position to take a risk on an interesting player like Whitcomb.
In 57 career MLB games over three seasons, Whitcomb has posted three home runs, 11 RBI, 16 hits, and a .167 batting average. It will be interesting to see how well he can improve upon his career stats with the Giants from here.
